A link stimulating communication and creating places for people to stop, chat and interact.

When asked to consider the fit-out for the lobby of a new office building in Bethesda Maryland we looked at creating maximum connectivity throughout the lower 5 levels for JBG Smith’s future headquarters.

Inspired by Pierre Chareau’s Masion de Verre and its beautiful use of glass block set within a painted steel frame, the lobby is imaged as a light filled environment linking to an adjacent café. The cobalt blue metal panels of the lift lobby function as bold bookends to the double height space. Together the glass block and steel panels form a light screen obscuring daylight and diffusing light.

A lightweight stair cascades through multiple levels linking the office space to lobby, and lobby to gym at lower ground floor. Portions of the office floor plates are opened to permit visible continuity of space, enhance communication between staff and encourage informal gathering spaces.
